As I mentioned a few posts back, Nukeproof uses the finest materials and machining to create a super refined system. One of the side benefits of this is that machining tolerances are tighter than ordinary hollow-cam systems. The result of this tighter tolerancing is that they don’t need to build as many cam followers. Also, the cam lobe on the 420 series cams is flat with a larger radius of curvature; this prevents the cam lobe from diving into the side of the follower, a common occurrence on conventional cams. A flat designed cam makes a good seal with the chamber wall and also provides a perfect plane for the lobe to move in 1:1 contact and a smooth lift off, lock off and opening. This also means no sudden kick on the lobe. It locks in from the center of the lobe and opens smoothly. The flat cam itself is also stronger. The larger radius of curvature also offers a better contact area. For more info on cams, please refer to our understanding the mechanics of cams in bikes .
As perfect as a racing camshaft is, reality is that for street riders this flat design may not be ideal due to the added friction created between the camshaft and the rider. In this case, Nukeproof offers the 45 degree Series. Here too, only premium cams are used to produce a refined profile. This is deemed the best profile for street riding. The 45 degree design of the cam also requires the use of a lobe that is -6 degrees. This is more on the upward side of the lobe which also allows for smoother movement of the cam and lobe. This results in a softer, more pleasing profile. d2c66b5586
